Cultural Identities in Europe: Nations and Regions, Migration and Minorities

An international conference on "Cultural Identities in Europe" was being held at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt on the 24th and 25th of June 2011. It focused on the cultural significance of established categories, such as the nation state, which have received new interpretations and evaluations in the course of the European integration process. While in the 19th century the formation of the nation state led to a neglect of regional identities, these have assumed a new significance within the supranational structure of the European Union. In addition, attention will be paid to those forces which have stood in contrast to the idea of homogeneous political or cultural communities. Among these, processes of migration and the status of minorities are of special importance. It is obvious that the current processes of political and cultural integration in Europe also call for new reflections on how these categories and forces are interrelated. While in the past, cultural identities were often regarded as mutually exclusive, more recently, multiple or hybrid identities have been suggested as a more suitable reflection of the European Union's credo "united in diversity".
