Michael Werner studied German and History for teacher’s degree at the Catholic University Eichstätt-Ingolstadt and Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest. His focus was on history didactics and public history (Bachelor’s thesis: Immured History? Intended Contours of Historical Thinking in History School Books of the GDR). In 2012, he completed his studies with the first state examination.

The focus of his work at the Chair of Theory and Didactics of History lies on empirical research concerning historical awareness and competences of historical thinking (Master’s thesis: Usage of ‘Cognitive Lab’ for Examination and Optimisation of Constructional Principles for the Development of Tasks which Quantitatively Measure Competences of Historical Thinking). He was part of the BMBF funded project 'HiTCH' (Historical Thinking – Competences in History), in which a  Large-Scale-Test for measuring historical competences was developed. He also designed a knowledge test to empirically accompany the introduction of the m-book project in North-Rheine Westphalia.

His doctoral thesis will be about the empirically important question of the relationship between historical knowledge and competences of historical thinking.  Historical knowledge should be distinguished in different types concerning their level of abstraction and function. Afterwards, different types of historical knowledge will be operationalized and their relationship to the development of historical competences will be examined.
