Teaching

The study of philosophy at KU Eichstätt-Ingolstadt guarantees a basic formation in and the acquisition of certain well established material and methodical skills. Through its study students acquire a foundational knowledge of the schools of philosophical thought, the historical periods in which they emerged, and the viewpoints they represented. Students will come to learn the main forms of philosophical thought and deal with them thoroughly, in particular with respect to their conceptual analysis, argumentation, logical deduction, and textual exegesis, in addition to an appreciation of the systematic and historical controversies that surround them. They will not only acquire the ability to deal with the advantages and disadvantages of descriptive and normative questioning, but also gain a methodological and theoretical critical ability and become acquainted with the task of collating their own philosophical thoughts and the results of study into independent and appropriate contributions to the discourse unique to the discipline. At the center of our tuition stand those classic primary texts, both of philosophical tradition and of the present. They are made accessible to the student in seminars and courses devoted to their exposition, grounded on the appropriate reading material. All this, together with the close cooperation of their lecturers, form for students the basis of the development of their individual thinking profile. Alongside those methods of immersion which are opened up through the study of various schools of philosophical thought and the historical periods in which they emerge, in addition to the acquisition of the fundamentals of the discipline, stand special possibilities which make it possible for students to integrate into their studies a semester spent in other centers of learning (both here in Germany and abroad; in particular in many Catholic universities of international renown) and practical experience (which may also lead to possible fields of activity of a professional scope, such as journalism, media studies, continued and further education, or consultancy work), and thereby to attain for oneself a focused and individual professional profile.

The systematic construction and implementation of our course of study is guaranteed through its framework, founded on the consideration of significant philosophical periods (ancient, late antiquity and medieval, Renaissance and early modernity, modernity and the present), branches of study (theoretical philosophy, in particular ontology, epistemology, anthropology and cultural philosophy, aesthetics as well as practical philosophy, in particular ethics, the philosophy of state and right, social philosophy, the philosophy of history, and the philosophy of religion), and the basic approaches to philosophy in general (metaphysics, transcendental philosophy, phenomenology, and the philosophy of language). Students will also learn to understand and to evaluate especially the practical and real consequences and the efficacy of philosophical thinking in the life of society and culture. To this also belongs the alignment of certain interdisciplinary and intercultural possibilities with the subject philosophy.

The Chair of Philosophy also welcomes those with an existing interest in the areas of metaphysics, contemporary and historical ontology, anthropology, cultural philosophy and intercultural philosophy, and practical and theoretic ethics.

Courses

Within the interdisciplinary framework, philosophy can be studied and graduated in at the KU in combination with a multitude of other subjects. It is also an especial possibility to complete the course with an academic qualifying work in the subject philosophy, which can be the starting point of a further immersion in the discipline by means of the interdisciplinary masters course in philosophy, as well as the doctorate in philosophy.
