Research

The Center for Flight and Migration analyzes (forced) migration phenomena from different perspectives in its research. We focus on solidarity, citizenship, and defense in the context of conflictual negotiations about belonging and membership in migration societies. Causes, motives, and barriers of migration have multiplied against the backdrop of global developments. The globally unequal distribution of social, political, and economic rights is both a cause and a consequence of socio-political demarcations.

In its research, the Center for Flight and Migration analyzes tensions between participation and defense. Our research projects deal, for example, with civil society solidarity in the context of civic engagement, fighting in church asylum, or the access of refugees to the labor market. We also focus on questions concerning the living conditions of refugees in camps, opinion-forming processes in (media) public spheres, the constructions of pasts and memories in the context of educational processes in the migration society, and the creation and spread of racism.

All projects contribute to understanding social, political, and economic border relations and examine the entanglement of participation and exclusion by taking a closer look at both the integrative (media) potentials and the mechanisms of exclusion (defensive attitudes in the population).
