Studying Romance Studies or one of the Romance sub-disciplines  Franco-Romance Studies, Hispanic Studies or Italian Studies means more than just learning the languages concerned and using them communicatively. On the basis of intensive practice in language training by native-speaking teachers, it deals with the history and especially the philological development of the respective cultures. Literary Studies provides profound knowledge about the formation of epochs, genre theory and research fields in cultural studies in the Romance area. Relevant methods of text analysis allow students to interpret literary works in their complexity. Romance Linguistics is focused on the historical and contemporary analysis of the sound structure, syntax, word forms and lexicon of the Romance languages. It also explores the differences between dialects and standard language, processes of language change and language acquisition, and the use of language in everyday life.

In the Teacher Training Courses, this spectrum is complemented by subject-specific didactics, which conveys the methodology of preparing and presenting foreign language, literary and linguistic skills in a way that is relevant to teaching.

In Eichstätt, the discipline of Romance Studies can be studied in several courses of study, depending on your interests and professional goals. In addition to the teaching profession subjects French, Italian or Spanish (for High School and in French also for Realschule), each of which culminates in the State Examination and, if desired, in Lehramtplus with an additional Bachelor's or Master's degree, there is the possibility to individually choose either the subject Romance Studies (with at least two sub-disciplines) or Franco-Romance Studies, Hispanic Studies and Italian Studies within the Degree Programme of the Interdisciplinary Bachelor's and Master's programmes of the KU, and in the Master's programme also Lusitanian Studies. The formation of focal points in Linguistics or Literary Studies allows students to pursue individual interests within a well-founded and clearly structured study.

Various Combination Options

In the Flexible Profile of the Interdisciplinary Bachelor's and Master's Programmes, one, two or all three sub-disciplines can be combined with each other, but also with a variety of other disciplines. In the profile "Aisthesis. Culture and Media", on the other hand, it is possible to combine two sub-degrees with a basic education in cultural and media studies in disciplines such as Art History or Journalism. Franco-Roman Studies, Hispanic Studies and Italian Studies can also be selected.

Both profiles thus enable students to plan their studies individually to a high extent and - also through the internships they have to complete - to set a focus during their studies toward a later career choice.

Other interdisciplinary courses of study at the KU, such as Latin American Studies (BA) and European Studies (BA and MA), also include Romance components and - by choosing the appropriate optional modules and completing the final thesis - allow students to set a Romansh focus.

The prerequisite for the study of Romance Studies or the sub-disciplines Franco-Romance Studies, Hispanic Studies and Italian Studies is, in addition to the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, proof of language skills at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Intensive courses are offered in Italian and Spanish, so that study of these subjects can be undertaken in Eichstätt even without the appropriate previous knowledge.
