Research priorities

Dogmatics researches the history of the Christian faith from a systematic perspective. It focuses primarily on the internal relationship between individual moments in this history and on how the historical Christian message is to be understood and accepted consistently in terms of faith.

The Chair’s main research priorities are the history of theology and dogma and the double testimony of faith and knowledge of the faith of the Church in medieval Europe.

Professor Gerwing is co-editor of the renowned series Beiträge zur Geschichte der Philosophie und Theologie des Mittelalters (Contributions on the history of medieval philosophy and theology). The Chair also publishes the Handbuch der Dogmengeschichte (Handbook of the history of dogma).

The Chair is conducting research projects funded by institutions such as the German Research Foundation on spirituality in the Late Middle Ages and on Latin sermon literature in the Middle Ages.
