Library Scanning Service

Electronic course collection (ESA)

In the 2020 summer semester, the University Library provides a special offer with a significantly expanded range of temporary licensed media and a scanning service for printed titles to support you in your digital teaching practice. The aim is to provide information in the electronic course collection (ESA) via ILIAS.

Embedding licensed electronic media

  • E-books that are accessible via the catalog/OPAC can be embedded into your ILIAS courses using the OPAC permalink (link in the upper right corner above the title display). This enables students to access the title directly.
  • In addition, the University Library currently provides temporary electronic offers of publishers that cannot be integrated into OPAC and are therefore only accessible via the University Library website (see "Additional e-media offers"). In view of short temporary availability, some links may be empty after the start of the semester. If you would like to permanently include one of these titles to your course collection, please contact your subject librarian.
  • It is only allowed to embed essays published in licensed handbooks, journals or databases as links, not as text elements.

Embedding print media

From now on, the University Library offers a scanning service for literature that is not yet available digitally.
If you would like to make use of this service, please download the Excel template for the scanning order. Please fill in the data for your scanning order and provide information on the required literature. Then send the file by e-mail to: ub-semesterapparate(at)

Alternatively, you can also create a list of literature from your OPAC memory list (short version) or from Citavi and attach it to your e-mail. In order to do so, please have the literature list sent to your own e-mail address and forward it to the University Library together with the completed request form for scanning services (first part of the Excel file).

Please note the maximum framework legally permissible for scanning:

  • Scans of 15% of a work – including edited volumes – from the University Library stocks
       • The number of pages of a title is displayed in OPAC (tab “more title information")
       • Tables of content can often be viewed in OPAC by clicking the corresponding button, if required, we can also send you a scan of the table of contents
       • Please state the exact page numbers in your request
       • An accumulation of requests for the same work for a course collection is not permissible
  • Scans of small-scale works (no longer than 25 pages)
  • Scans of individual essays from printed journals
  • Scans of works from the University Library stocks that are out of stock in book stores and are neither available as e-book nor as printed version

This allows you to offer literature in a legally permissible way on ILIAS (see PDF Section 60a UrhG). Please take note of the detailed legal regulations in Section 60a UrhG in connection with the provision of works on ILIAS. Further information is provided in the PDF guideline published by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF): "Urheberrecht in der Wissenschaft" .

Provision is made in electronic form. We will inform you by e-mail.

If you have any questions, please contact

¹Please bear in mind that this service can be used by all University lecturers and that the Library is currently working with limited staff resources. Therefore, we would like to ask you to submit your wishes in due time before the start of the semester and confine yourself to the most important literature.

Research and final thesis

The university library supports students who cannot be on site due to the Corona crisis on their own scientific research in order to write their final thesis (BA, MA, state examination, dissertation). Up to a maximum of 75% of a printed book can be made available as digital copie. This offer is limited until August 7, 2020.

This is how it works:

  • You can choose up to 9 titles from the University Library stocks (no interlibrary loans, only titles that are not on loan)
  • Write an email to bibliothek(at) or ub-wfi(at) and state the titles and the page numbers or chapters that you need. You can use the function My list in our library catalog OPAC.
  • The order will only be accepted if it includes the following passage: "I hereby certify that I need the scans for my own scientific research in context with my final thesis [e. g. master's thesis]. I will delete the scans after use; I will not distribute them further, neither technically nor personally. I have checked that my order does not exceed 75% per title."
  • We will send you a notification and provide you with a file.

If you have any questions, please contact the staff of the University Library at: bibliothek(at) or ub-wfi(at)

  • Please make use of our exceptional lending offer see “Lending for KU members”).
  • Acquisition requests are processed to a limited extent. If you would like to file a request, please contact your responsible subject librarian.
  • If you have any questions regarding literature research, please contact your subject librarians.
  • It is possible to submit entries for the university bibliography KU.edoc. Please do not be surprised if processing takes a little longer than usual.
  • We support you in setting up an electronic course collection in ILIAS by providing an expanded range of licensed electronic media and by offering a scanning service for printed titles. More detailed information is available at “Electronic course collection (ESA)”.
