American Studies Guest Professorship/Visiting Scholars

Sylvia Newman (Weber State University, USA), Visiting Scholar, Summer Term 2019

Sylvia Newman, instructor of English at our partner institution Weber State University in Ogden (Utah, USA), is a visiting scholar in American Studies during the Summer Term 2019. She teaches the following two block courses:

 Literary and Cultural History I: American Women Writers after 1900

    • An introduction to the fiction of North American women through their short stories and novels, selected mostly from the last century. This class is designed to introduce students to various ways of reading, thinking and writing about literature, specifically the genres of the short story and novel. We will learn how to read literary texts closely, and respond personally and critically. This class aims to teach students how to demonstrate knowledge of literary traditions, as well as of key themes, concepts, issues and terminology of literary studies; analyze literature from different time periods and cultures; and demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate understanding of literature in written and graphic forms.

Composition Workshop / Academic Writing

    • The course provides instruction and practice in exposition, argument/persuasion, and documented research. It emphasizes critical thinking, the reciprocity of reading and writing, and the production of well-developed analytical arguments.

Prof. Yael Schacher (University of Texas at Austin, USA), Guest Professor, Winter Term 2018/19

Prof. Yael Schacher was Guest Professor in American Studies during the Winter Term 2018/19. She gave a public lecture on "A Peril or a Promise?: Flashpoints in the History of Asylum in the United States" in cooperation with the Zentrum für Flucht und Migration, and taught seminars on human rights and immigration in contemporary American drama.

Prof. Annette J. Saddik (New York City College of Technology and the CUNY Graduate Center Doctoral Program in Theatre, USA), Guest Professor, Winter Term 2018/19

Prof. Eric Sandeen (University of Wyoming, USA), Guest Professor, Winter Term 2016/17 and Winter Term 2014/15

Prof. Eric Sandeen, director of American Studies at our partner institution, the University of Wyoming (USA), was Guest Professor in American Studies during the Winter Term 2016/17 and 2014/15. He co-taught the course "The Family of Man and Beyond: Reviewing American Documentary Photography" together with Kerstin Schmidt and took part in both the excursion to Luxemburg and the workshop at the Family of Man exhibition at the Castle of Clerveaux, Luxemburg.

Kyra Hudson (Weber State University, USA), Visiting Scholar, Summer Term 2015

Kyra Hudson, instructor of English at our partner institution Weber State University in Ogden (Utah, USA), was visiting scholar in American Studies during the Summer Term 2015. She taught the courses "American Humor" and “The North American Short Story.”
