Following Ms Gaidolfi's block seminar, a 4-5 day study trip to northern Italy will follow in April 2021 (pending approval).

What language(s) are officially spoken in Italy? There are a total of 5 "regioni a statuto speciale" there, for which the answer to the question is not just "Italian". Through their autonomous status, they have the right to adapt certain laws, e.g. concerning language policy, to the specific circumstances of the region.

The 5 regions are Sardinia, Sicily, Friuli-Venezia Giulia as well as Valle d'Aosta and Trentino-Alto Adige. These two regions will be the focus of the seminar, especially their multilingualism: in Valle d'Aosta, Italian is flanked by French (and also Franco-Provençal), while in Trentino-Alto Adige one can find not only German and Italian, but also Ladin. We will look at and compare the regions in terms of language knowledge, use and policy.

The topic of the block seminar is "Structures and Contexts of Italian. Italian and German in Northern Italy".

If you are interested in participating, please contact Ms Amann (sabine.amann@ku.de).

A first information meeting will take place in November.
