Militarized Infrastructures in Mexico and Their Socio-Environmental Impacts – Lecture by Dr. Alke Jenss

How does militarization reshape infrastructure development in Mexico? Dr. Alke Jenss examines the military's growing role in transport, logistics, and energy infrastructures, focusing on the political power relations and socio-environmental consequences of these transformations.

As part of the ZILAS Winter Lecture Series 2026/27 on Environmental Justice in Latin America, Dr. Alke Jenss from the Arnold Bergstraesser Institute in Freiburg will discuss the militarization of infrastructures in Mexico.

Since 2018, Mexico has experienced major infrastructure investments, with the military assuming an increasingly prominent role in their development and operation. The lecture examines how military ownership and control reshape transport, logistics, and energy infrastructures.

Particular attention is given to changing configurations of state power, the intersection of economic and security interests, and the socio-environmental consequences of infrastructure expansion. The lecture addresses broader questions of political agency, infrastructural development, and environmental justice.
