The international European Conference of Operational Research (EURO) was held this year in Leeds (United Kingdom). The conference brought together researchers from across Europe and beyond to discuss the latest advances in operations research. A special focus was on innovative methods for solving complex decision-making problems in economics, engineering, and society, including applications in transportation and logistics.
Stefan Voigt presented a joint research project with Johannes Gückel and Pirmin Fontaine. In this project, machine learning techniques were used to identify and selectively eliminate non-optimal edges in TSP and VRP instances. This approach enables the underlying optimization problems to be solved significantly more quickly.
Alexander Rave presented a research project conducted together with Pirmin Fontaine in the field of disaster management. The goal of this project is to evaluate a drone-based system for monitoring river flows before, during, and after flood disasters. The system is intended to help relief organizations such as the Red Cross provide aid more rapidly and effectively to those affected.
