Study on staggering the start of classes at secondary schools in the city of Ingolstadt presented

On 22.03.22, Dr. Veronika Hecht, research assistant at ZFG, presented the results of the study at the meeting of the Committee for Culture and Education of the City of Ingolstadt.

In the study, which was conducted on behalf of the city of Ingolstadt, a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods of empirical social research was used to gather the opinions of school principals and parents on a staggered or later start of classes. The study included Ingolstadt's Realschulen, Gymnasien, vocational schools and FOS/BOS.

In the meeting, the central arguments against and in favor of such a plan were presented. A differentiation was made between school organizational and family-related effects. It was also discussed how the stakeholders involved assess the feasibility of staggering or postponing teaching times: While school principals are clearly opposed to a staggered schedule, the opinion of parents is mixed, but here, too, opposition predominates.
