The ZILAS Winter Lecture Series 2026/27 is dedicated to environmental justice in Latin America. The seven lectures address different but interconnected dimensions of the topic and examine how environmental burdens, resources, and opportunities for political agency are unevenly distributed across societies and territories.
The series addresses children’s rights and youth political agency in the climate crisis, power relations and inequalities in food systems, water and hydrosocial inequalities, militarized infrastructures and their socio-environmental impacts, post-fossil extractivism and uncertain energy futures, as well as aquatic and desert ecologies.
Taken together, the lectures show how environmental crises are entangled with power relations, social inequalities, bodies, generations, infrastructures, and territorial conflicts. At the same time, they offer different perspectives on how environmental justice is negotiated and what imaginaries of justice and the future emerge from these struggles.
Bringing together scholars from different disciplines and international universities, the lecture series provides a forum for discussing current research and debates on environmental justice in Latin America.
All lectures will be held in English. The series is organized in a hybrid format and can be attended either in person in Eichstätt or online via Zoom.
