Who Writes Our History? – A Documentary Film in Search of Traces

Drawing on his current documentary film WIR, DIE WOLFS, director Darío Aguirre will speak about filmmaking as a space of reflection, encounter, and coming to terms with the past. The conversation will focus on colonial continuities, family myths, and a silenced Indigenous motherhood.

About the film

A family in Ecuador proudly looks back on its German ancestor, the naturalist and land surveyor Theodor Wolf. One hundred years after his death, it comes to light that, in Germany, he never mentioned his children in Ecuador. This blind spot in the family history raises questions and unsettles the identity of his descendants.

Wolf’s great-great-grandson, filmmaker Darío Aguirre, sets out in search of traces. The result is a moving family saga about pride, forgetting, and the stories that make us who we believe we are.
