Winter Lecture Series: “(Post-)Colonial Worlds: Rewriting and Remapping Hegemonic Relations”

In winter term 2020/21 the joint interdisciplinary lecture series organized by the Eichstätt Winter Lecture Series and the Central Institute for Latin American Studies (ZILAS) at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt is focusing on "(Post-)Colonial Worlds: Rewriting and Remapping Hegemonic Conditions" and approaches the phenomenon from historical, geographical, literary, sociological, and cultural-theoretical perspectives.

Colonial conditions and their postcolonial consequences have shaped the world since the early modern period and are currently receiving increased media attention in light of resistance movements such as Black Lives Matter and the toppling of monuments. In this context, the need to rewrite traditional hegemonic historiography and redraw colonial geographies is increasingly coming into focus.

Increased sensitivity to issues of justice and distribution, as well as increasingly critical reflection on historiography and literary and cartographic representations, are leading to new forms of representation and presentation, including the renaming of places, streets, and historical events, and the rewriting of literary myths. The realization that the legacy of colonialism continues to cause war, hunger, poverty, and exploitation to this day and triggers international refugee movements leads to a questioning of existing power structures and calls for new, more equitable perspectives and courses of action.

With lectures on the legacy of slavery in England, postcolonial literature in Sicily, Black Lives Matter, resistance movements among indigenous populations in South America, NGOs in Africa, and more, this year's lecture series offers an interdisciplinary overview of colonial and postcolonial global contexts.

The event will always take place virtually on alternate Wednesdays and Thursdays, starting on November 12. Registration and further information can be found at: www.ku.de/wintervortragsreihe

The series is organized by Prof. Dr. Isabelle Stauffer, Dr. Corinna Dziudzia, Dr. Simon Goebel, Dr. Sergej Gordon, Christiane Hoth, Dr. Katharina List, Dr. Gerhard Rainer and Nicole Anna Schneider.
