Lateinamerika in Bewegung: Prof. Dr. Oscar Palma on the Persistence of Armed Conflict in Colombia

Why does armed conflict persist in Colombia despite the 2016 Peace Agreement? Prof. Dr. Oscar Palma (Universidad del Rosario, Colombia) examines the dynamics of armed groups and the internal and external mechanisms that contribute to the continuation of conflict.

Self-sustainment dynamics in armed groups systems and the continuation of conflict in Colombia

The Zentralinstitut für Lateinamerikastudien (ZILAS) welcomes Prof. Dr. Oscar Palma from Universidad del Rosario, Colombia, as part of the Lateinamerika in Bewegung lecture series.

Despite the 2016 peace agreement between the Colombian government and the country’s main insurgent group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the conflict has intensified in recent years. Cocaine production and other illicit economies have reached record levels, while the number of armed groups has grown.

Understanding this resurgence may require viewing armed actors as part of a broader system, shaped by internal and external dynamics that sustain the conflict and make peace seem increasingly elusive.

The lecture examines these self-sustaining dynamics and their implications for understanding the persistence of armed conflict in Colombia.
