You can apply for recognition of all credits earned outside your current degree program at the KU from another university. Academic achievements are generally recognized unless there is a significant difference in the competences between the source module of the other university and the target module of the recognition at the KU.
Typical situations in which you would submit a request for recognition of externally acquired achievements are:
You can submit a credit transfer request (can be found in the online credit transfer portal under "Recognition of external achievements") for all VHB courses in which the acquisition of specific skills has been proven by passing an examination (please note that mere participation is usually not sufficient).
If you are planning to attend a VHB course, we recommend that you check in advance whether the examination you are about to take can be recognized at a later date. For this purpose, please select the request for recognition of an external achievement (“Anrechnung von externen Leistungen”), type VHB (preliminary check) (“VHB (Vorabprüfung)”), in the online credit transfer portal. Once you have successfully passed your VHB course exam, you only need to add the grade to your request by means of a grade certificate.
Credit transfer in the narrower sense (see Information provided by the German Rectors’ Conference) is used when competences acquired in non-university contexts are to be credited to modules of the degree program.
The following skills, among others, are eligible for recognition:
Skills acquired in non-university contexts can replace a maximum of 50 per cent of the skills to be proven in the degree program.
In contrast to academic recognition, proof must be provided that the skills acquired are equivalent to the skills to be acquired within the degree program. The person submitting the credit transfer request is responsible for providing proof of equivalence. As a rule, it is therefore necessary to submit documentation that contains a comparison of the skills acquired in a non-university context with the skill description of the KU module for which credit is to be transferred, the so-called target module. This documentation should contain details in terms of content, scope and requirements. Only if it can be clearly demonstrated that the skills are essentially equivalent, there is a chance for approval of a corresponding credit transfer request.
