Prof. Barbara Kuhn, a Romance scholar at the KU, was elected president of the German Study Center in Venice at its annual meeting. Prof. Albrecht Cordes, a legal historian at Goethe University Frankfurt, was elected vice president.

The center was opened in 1972 as a meeting place for Italian and German culture and research. Today, it is mainly financed by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, currently Claudia Roth, Member of the German Bundestag, and is an interdisciplinary institution that promotes cultural studies research and artistic work on the history and present of Venice and its territory. The center awards scholarships to artists from various disciplines as well as to young scholars whose research projects are related to Venice or areas that were once under Venetian rule.

The German Study Center regularly hosts international conferences, lectures, concerts, and other cultural events, which are also popular with the Venetian community. Once a year, an interdisciplinary study course on a variety of topics is held, primarily for doctoral candidates and advanced students. In addition, a renowned guest of honor from the arts, culture, or science is usually invited each year to further enrich the program. The Study Center has a library with over 14,500 titles and is responsible for the publication of three academic series, Venetiana, Quaderni, and Studi, which are published partly in Italy and partly in Germany.

Since 2023, the director has been PD Dr. Richard Erkens, a musicologist and opera researcher.
