Same name, new discovery system:

Introducing the new OPAC

Screenshot des neuen OPAC (Beta-Phase)

The OPAC keeps its name, but behind the scenes it now runs on an entirely new search platform. The new system offers a more modern search experience, a cleaner presentation of results, and more convenient access to print and electronic resources. The previous library catalog is being replaced by the discovery system “VuFind”, an open-source application for library search systems that was designed by libraries for libraries and is continuously developed through community collaboration.

The new OPAC is now available in beta at opac-ub.ku.de and will fully replace the current OPAC at the end of the 2026 summer semester. Until then, both systems will run in parallel, giving you the opportunity to explore the new catalog while continuing to use the familiar search interface if needed.

What’s new

  • modernized search interface with a cleaner presentation of results across all colections, local and beyond KU
  • a clearer overview of item availability
  • an optimized layout for smartphones and tablets.
  • improved favorites and clipboard functionality
  • no more session timeouts
  • direct access to the search interface without selecting a pickup location
  • New and exclusive to KU: Smart Search — enter your query in natural language, and Smart Search automatically converst it into a structured OPAC search

Beta phase: What does that mean?

The new OPAC is fully functional. During the beta phase, however, we will continue testing and refining the search in real-world use. Individual features may still change or be added, and minor display or functionality issues are possible. Your feedback helps us improve the system.

The current OPAC will remain fully available until the final switchover.

Favorites lists

Your favorites lists from the current OPAC will be transferred to the new system as part of the final switchover. From September 1, 2026, these lists will be available in the new OPAC.

You can sign in to the new OPAC the same way as before, using your user number and password.

Online introductions

The transition will be accompanied by 15-minute online introductions to the new interface, giving you a quick overview of all new features. Sessions start June 22, 2026 — for all dates and details, visit Tours and Courses »

The new OPAC is still in beta, so we'd love to hear from you. What is working well? Where are you running into issues? What features would you like to see added? Please share your experience with us through our feedback form. Thank you for your support!
