The KU was established by the Apostolic See and the Free State of Bavaria as contract partners of the Concordat in March 1980. It is supported by a Catholic foundation that was established by the bishops of Bavaria. Its name is the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt Foundation (Stiftung Katholische Universität Eichstätt-Ingolstadt).
