The University of Wroclaw in Poland and the KU want to intensify their collaboration in the areas of research and teaching. At the end of January, the President of Uniwersytet Wrocławski (UWr), Prof. Dr. Robert Olkiewicz, signed a corresponding cooperation agreement during a visit to Eichstätt together with KU President Prof. Dr. Gabriele Gien. This week, a KU delegation paid a return visit to Wroclaw in the context of a political science conference.

The KU and UWr have been working together for several years within the framework of Erasmus agreements. In this context, KU students could spend several semesters abroad in Wroclaw, while Eichstätt has also welcomed students from the Polish partner university in return. Lecturers from both universities also visited the respectively other university as part of the "Erasmus teaching staff mobility" program.

The newly signed cooperation agreement is intended to intensify cooperation not only as regards student exchange, but also joint work on research projects and short-term programs such as summer schools. "Our Polish partners expressed their wish to deepen our cooperation – and we were happy to comply", says Prof. Dr. Klaus Stüwe, Vice President for International Affairs. As a political scientist, Stüwe had already expanded relations with the UWr in recent years – including as part of a joint German Academic Exchange Service project with Prof. Dr. Tadeusz Lebioda from the Chair of German Studies at UWr. The project approaches a comparison of German and Polish democracies and is entitled "Demokratie(n) in Bewegung: Deutschland und Polen im Vergleich

A few days after the signing of the agreement in Eichstätt, a conference with the topic “Germany and Poland: difficult history, current challenges, common future" was held in Wroclaw, including at the German Consulate General there. It was organized by the Chair of German Studies at the Institute for International Studies and Security, that invited researchers and students from the Chair of Comparative Political Science at the KU. At the conference, Martin Kremer, the German Consul General in Wroclaw, expressed his delight about the partnership between the KU and the UWr and emphasized his desire to further develop relations between Lower Silesia and Bavaria.

During the conference, the researchers discussed the topic of borders in depth from a historical and current perspective. Discussions were followed by analyses of bilateral relations and transnational environmental policy using the example of the environmental disaster on the river Oder in 2022. The conference concluded with analyses of the 2023 elections in Bavaria and Poland by Klaus Stüwe and Tadeusz Lebioda. "I am delighted that a joint international third-party funded project between two chairs has enabled a lively exchange between researchers and students", says Stüwe. Janina Hummel, a student on the Politics and Society Bachelor's degree program at the KU, agreed: "It was great that we, as students from Eichstätt, were also able to get involved and exchange ideas with the Polish students. The conference was very informative and enriching for me."
