New KU Master’s degree program in “Business and Psychology”

Starting in the upcoming winter semester, the KU launches its new interdisciplinary Master’s degree program in “Business and Psychology”. It is offered by a mixed team of lecturers from the fields of business administration, economics and psychology. “In view of growing leadership complexity, it is of increasing importance for managers and executives to also have psychological know-how in addition to economic knowledge. The field of psychology helps to better understand human behavior in an organizational context while business and economics ensure that corresponding economic expertise is covered. The new degree program combines these two worlds”, explain the program coordinators psychologist Prof. Dr. Elisabeth Kals and economist Prof. Dr. Simon Wiederhold.

Nowadays, psychologists and managers in many organizations are working hand in hand – often in international teams. Due to differences in their training and professional education, these two professional groups follow their own approaches and traditions with which they align their actions. In the Master’s program in “Business and Psychology“, the disciplinary boundaries between business and psychology are be overcome by following a broad and interdisciplinary approach.

The four-semester studies focus on leadership and management practices in organizations. Another focus is on human behavior and behavior of groups outside an organizational context, e.g. in economic and financial settings or on how intercultural questions and issues can be approached. The program teaches skills for analyzing and improving leadership and management decisions, employee motivation and behavior, performance and job satisfaction as well as consumer behavior. All required courses are held in English to prepare students for the international working environment in their future careers and to ensure that the program is also open to international students.

Successful graduates of the program will be able to adopt unifying perspectives and approaches across disciplines in order to render decision-making processes more efficient. The program qualifies graduates for management positions as executives, human resource managers, marketing and product managers or consultants. Academically interested students are equipped with the necessary knowledge and tools for a career in research or to continue their studies in doctoral programs.
