New Professorship for Artificial Intelligence in Nursing Science

In cooperation with private, Church and public regional partners, the KU has launched a new endowed Professorship for Artificial Intelligence in Nursing. Over a period of five years, the district of Eichstätt will contribute €250,000 toward the funding of the professorship, while the city of Eichstätt will contribute up to €150,000. €350,000 will be supplied by the Eichstätt Caritas Foundation and the Ingolstadt Ingenium Foundation, partly from funds of their founder and longtime chairwoman Mathilde Greil. The professorship will be located at the KU’s Faculty of Social Work, which has already been offering a degree program in nursing sciences for many years now.

Artificial intelligence in the context of nursing is often associated with robots. However, their development is still in its infancy. More relevant and more readily available, on the other hand, are IT-supported systems for documentation, applications in diagnostics, and other networked assistance and monitoring systems - for telemedicine, for example. These will change nursing for both caregivers and patients, especially in the case of dementia. AI can support professionals in hospitals and retirement homes in the time-consuming process of documenting care by using speech recognition to do so even while care-givers are interacting with patients. However, little research has been done to date on the general prospects and hurdles that arise from the use of AI in nursing in particular - both for the everyday life of professional players and those affected and with regard to the qualifications of specialists. This is where the new endowed professorship will come in to provide expertise for the region and beyond. It will also be linked to the Ingolstadt research center "AININ - Artificial Intelligence Network Ingolstadt", of which the KU is a founding member. As part of a Bavarian network, the center aims at translating research results into concrete applications that are relevant to society - combined with prospects for start-ups in the region.

"At the professorship, application-oriented solutions for improving the situation of people with care needs are to be developed, made marketable and marketed. The central impetus here is to improve the situation of people with care needs and to relieve the professional staff," says the Dean of the Faculty of Social Work, Prof. Dr. Frank Wießner. KU Vice president Prof. Dr. Klaus Stüwe emphasizes that the KU sees itself as a university embedded in the region and an institution that deliberately addresses the socially relevant issues of the day in close exchange with the local population and partners: "Particularly in the field of nursing, it is vital that technology not be an end in itself but ultimately serves the people. The fact that the new endowed Professorship for Artificial Intelligence in Nursing is supported by so many institutions not only in non-material ways, but also financially, makes us very proud. This underlines the support our University has in the region, for which I sincerely wish to thank all sponsors.”

The starting point for the talks with potential donors initiated by Prof. Dr. Stefan Schieren (Professor of Political Science at the Faculty of Social Work) was a commitment from Mathilde Greil, founder of the Ingenium Foundation, to provide substantial partial funding for the project. "This was the crucial basis for being able to attract further donors to the professorship," says Schieren. The chairman of the foundation's board, Oskar Platzer, is convinced that the endowed professorship has good prospects of success: "The Ingenium Foundation has been committed to supporting people with dementia for almost two decades. The development of digital solutions will play a crucial role in improving the care situation.”

The Eichstätt district is also among the sponsors of the new foundation professorship. Landrat Alexander Anetsberger emphasizes: "I am very pleased that the KU is thus making an important contribution to a social megatopic - demographic change - and is combining this with a forward-looking technological approach. In this way, the University is having an impact in our region, and I expressly welcome that. That's why I'm also happy that the Kreistag has decided to provide significant funding for this professorship. This is our way of showing that we recognize and accept sociopolitical challenges - and this is certainly easier with a strong partner like the KU. Ideally, together we will succeed in initiating a business formation process in the wake of establishing this endowed professorship, which will lead to the settlement of start-ups and thus to the creation of new future-oriented jobs."

For Eichstätt's mayor Josef Grienberger, "This is one of the most important topics in the future and one of the most important jobs in the time to come". As a sponsor of this endowed professorship, the city of Eichstätt firmly believes that its contribution will help to improve care through artificial intelligence - for care-givers and for all those who depend on care equally. "As the past year in particular has shown: Care is an incredibly important pillar of society that we all rely on when things get serious. I would be delighted if this funding could spark off a collaboration between this professorship and local medical facilities - for example, our Eichstätt hospital or the Heilig-Geist-Spital.”

"The Caritas Foundation Eichstätt hopes that by co-financing the endowed professorship with the sum of €50,000, it will be able to make a contribution to the improvement of care and thus noticeably ameliorate the situation of both those in need of care and those working in the care sector. Moreover, the Caritas Foundation Eichstätt places great importance on contributing to sharpening the KU’s profile in an area that is of such a great value to society. We want to advance care and strengthen the region’s economy by being a strong partner,” says Alfred Frank, chairman of Caritas and director of the Caritas Foundation.

The new foundation professorship has already been advertised, so that the procedure of finding suitable applicants can begin in the course of this year. The position is expected to be filled in the winter semester of 2022/23.
