The working group “Shalom für Gerechtigkeit und Frieden” (Shalom for justice and peace) at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt (KU) awards its annual Shalom prize to the Youth Peace Ambassadors Network (YPAN). It is an international group of young activists whose goal is to promote human rights through education, advocacy work, and other nonviolent actions at the local, national, and international levels. YPAN sees itself as a “pan-European” network and counts more than 100 members from over 30 European states.

With the aim of training future “peace makers”, YPAN hosts workshops for young people worldwide that particularly focus on peace building and non-violent communication. The network is also active in crisis regions, currently in Kosovo.

“This is the first time that we award the prize to a supra-regional network instead of a specific project from one country. We believe that this decision is right in view of the complexity of conflicts and crises of our time. We are convinced that YPAN contributes to promoting a culture of peace in the world with its intensive educational work”, says Ulrike Schurr-Schöpfel, a member to the working group.

With the Shalom prize, the voluntary working group from Eichstätt annually honors individuals or groups who support the preservation of human rights and global peace in an exemplary manner and often at considerable personal risk.

The prize is one of the most highly endowed human rights prizes in Germany. In previous years, the prize money ranged between 25,000 and 32,000 euros. It is raised exclusively from donations by various institutions and private individuals.
