The KU in the CHE ranking: top placement and praise for coronavirus management

In the latest university ranking by the Centrum für Hochschulentwicklung (CHE) - Center for Higher Education, the KU has once again achieved top rankings with its wide range of courses. In the overall ranking, for political science the KU is among the ten best-rated universities for this subject.

In the opinion of KU students, political science is not only among the best in terms of the overall study situation, but also in terms of the range of courses. Here, respondents particularly praised the opportunities for setting individual priorities, the international orientation of courses, and the interdisciplinary content. They also appreciate the high level of organization when it comes to scheduling (compulsory courses, for example, rarely overlap), the accessibility of courses and the way in which the content of lectures matches that of the corresponding tutorials. One positive aspect that KU students have also mentioned in other surveys is once again confirmed for political science: The respondents emphasize the good relationship between students and faculty. In addition, as students maintain in the ranking, they get a lot of support in everyday university life, be it from the strong networking among students, information on organizational issues or the fact that lecture notes are made available to them. In the opinion of political science students, the same applies to the services for preparing a semester abroad and the transfer of credits earned during an ERASMUS semester.

As to the range of subjects at the KU, the CHE also surveyed the ratings for geography and mathematics in this year's round. Among other criteria, geography students rated the organization of their studies above average, as they did the support they received from their teachers and their teachers’ ability to take criticism. The same applies to mathematics students, who are also particularly satisfied with the IT infrastructure and the library facilities.

The CHE used the current survey as an opportunity to ask students not only about subject-related aspects, but also about how universities dealt with the restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic. Some of the aspects that students at the KU have called “very good” or “good” is the information management in the current situation, the opportunities for exchange with lecturers, the variety of digital teaching formats and the technical framework provided by the University. The same applies to the transparency of the requirements they face and the learning objectives set under coronavirus pandemic conditions as well as to enthusiasm of lecturers in spite of digital formats.

According to the CHE, their university ranking is the most comprehensive and detailed comparison of universities in the German-speaking world. They have surveyed around 120,000 students and looked at more than 300 universities and universities of applied sciences/technical colleges (HAW) as well as dual universities and vocational academies.
