1980–1986: Studied Geography at the University of Göttingen with minor subjects geology/paleontology, botany, regional planning and land use planning; wrote his final thesis for the Diplom on the topic of the influence of soil sealing on flood runoff.
1987–1991: Doctoral studies in Geography at the University of Göttingen (from October 1987) with minor subjects geology/paleontology and botany; completion of doctoral degree Dr. rer. nat.; wrote his doctoral thesis on the topic of the runoff behavior in small red sandstone catchments – studies in the Ziegenhagen aquatic research area
1991: Employed as Akademischer Rat a.Z. at the Institute of Geography at the University of Göttingen
1994: Research assistant in the department for Physical Geography (Prof. Dr. J. Hagedorn) at the Institute of Geography
2000: Habilitation at the University of Göttingen, Faculty of Geoscience Compiled his Habilitation thesis on the topic of possibilities for sustainable environmental development of a heavily polluted landscape in Russian Lapland through targeted structural land use change.
2000: Appointed as Oberassistent in the department for Physical Geography (Prof. Dr. J. Hagedorn) at the Institute of Geography
2001: Visiting lecturer at the University of Malta, Faculty of Biology, 2001/2002 winter semester, four courses (received financial support from the German Academic Exchange Service)
2004: Appointed adjunct professor at the University of Göttingen
2004: Temporary head of the Professorship and Department of Physical Geography at the Institute of Geography
2005: Took over the Professorship of Applied Physical Geography at the KU Eichstätt-Ingolstadt
2006: Appointment as head of the Floodplain Institute Neuburg
2012: Invited short-term visiting lectureship at Moscow State University; topics: environmental protection and renaturation
