Back to school! To present schoolchildren an exciting insight into contemporary topics in university mathematics, Dr. Dominik Engl was invited to the Franz-Marc-Gymnasium in Markt Schwaben on February 6, 2023. He discussed various aspects of the Calculus of Variations in an interactive format, including examples from everyday life, a review of Johann Bernoulli's brachistochrone, and current research questions with applications in material sciences.
The two-part lecture program continued for the mathematics teaching staff in the afternoon. Given the upcoming changes in the syllabus of Bavarian highschools, Dr. Engl gave two lectures to refresh some aspects of analysis. The treated topics included sequences and series with numerous applications and complex numbers.
