What does tourism mean to us? – Our students’ perspectives to mark World Tourism Day

We asked the students in our Management Simulation in Tourism exactly this question:

What does hospitality mean to you? And what role does tourism play in your life?

The answers were as diverse as the students themselves: They came from different academic disciplines, countries, and cultural backgrounds. And yet, surprisingly many common themes emerged.

For many, tourism is first and foremost about human connection. Meeting people, understanding different ways of life, sharing traditions, and gaining new perspectives. Travel can broaden our horizons – and sometimes create memories and connections that extend far beyond the actual stay.

At the same time, it became clear that hospitality is more than good service. Hospitality means welcoming people, anticipating their needs, making them feel safe and valued, and creating spaces where they feel comfortable. It is about the small moments that can turn a stay into a meaningful experience.

Tourism can also foster personal growth: discovering new places, navigating unfamiliar situations, becoming more independent, trying new things, and broadening our perspectives.

Closely connected to this is another perspective that repeatedly emerged in the students’ responses: responsibility. Tourism does not exist in isolation. It interacts with people, communities, cultures, and places. The way we travel, engage with local communities, and design tourism experiences therefore also shapes the places where tourism takes place.

From our perspective, this raises an important question for the future of tourism:
How can we create experiences that are meaningful for guests while also making a positive contribution to people, communities, and places?

In our Management Simulation in Tourism, students from different disciplines and countries engage with precisely these kinds of questions: They take responsibility for their own tourism business, make strategic decisions, and experience how closely economic, social, and environmental perspectives are interconnected.

On World Tourism Day, we therefore not only reflect on the meaning of tourism – we also look ahead: The next Management Simulation in Tourism is already just around the corner.
