Flávio Morgado joins ZILAS as Visiting Researcher

From September 2026 to January 2027, Flávio Morgado is joining the ZILAS – Center for Latin American Studies at the Katholische Universität Eichstätt-Ingolstadt for a research stay. Morgado is a PhD candidate in Political History at the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ – PPGH), where he is supervised by Prof. Dr. Eduardo Ferraz Felippe. Alongside his academic work, he is also a visual artist, curator and poet.

His doctoral project, “Insurgent Archive: Memory, Erasure and Symbolic Dispute in Brazilian Contemporary Art,” examines how contemporary Brazilian artists such as Rosângela Rennó, Rosana Paulino and Aline Motta engage with archives. Rather than treating the archive as a neutral repository of the past, his research approaches it as a site of aesthetic, historical and political struggle. The concept of the “insurgent archive” draws particular attention to processes of memory, erasure, visibility and the symbolic renegotiation of history.

The research stay is funded by the PDSE/CAPES programme. At ZILAS, Morgado will further develop the concept of the “insurgent archive” in dialogue with international debates on political memory, authoritarianism and transitional justice. His research stay at KU is supervised by Prof. Dr. Miriam Lay Brander and Prof. Dr. Nina Schneider.
