Construction measures for self-checkout in the Main Library

Automated return of books is now followed by self-checkout: On Wednesday, February 15, construction work will begin in the foyer of the Main Library to set up a pick-up area for ordered media, self-checkout terminals, a new information area, and a new entrance to the reading room.

All lending from the stacks and reading room in the Main Library, as well as all interlibrary loans, will now be converted to self-lending processes. Borrowing will thus be possible during the entire opening hours of the Library.

With the start of the renovation work, the lending desk will be closed. From now on, you can borrow your books independently at the self-checkout terminal in the reading room.

During the construction works, you will find your ordered media in pick-up shelves in the reading room directly in front of the information desk. Please collect your media here yourself and check them out at the self-checkout terminal directly behind the shelf. Ordered media will be ready for collection for two weeks. You can also borrow the freely accessible media (reference collection) from our reading room yourself. Please take into account availability for loan in this context: Books with a red line or red dot on the shelf mark cannot be borrowed.

Loans for use in the reading room are available at the information desk.

Here is how the self-checkout works:
[Translate to Englisch:] Ihre Bibliotheksbenutzernummer auf der KU.Card
  1. Get your books from the pick-up shelf.

The order of the books in the pick-up shelf is based on the first letter of your last name and the last five digits of your library user number.
Example: last name: Meier / library ID: 02772886089   M 86.089
  2. Scan the barcode of your KU.Card or library card at the self-checkout terminal
  3. Place the books on the glass plate under the scanner – you can borrow several books at once
  4. If you have booked all media, you can print out a receipt or have it sent to you – please note the loan periods specified on the receipt or in your user account
  5. Log off your user account with the "Finished" button – you are liable for third-party entries on your user account if you forgot to log off after you finished your self-checkout process!

If you encounter problems during the self-checkout process or if individual media cannot be booked in, please contact the information desk.

Undisturbed work in the Library

The reconstruction work will at times be accompanied by noise and dirt. In order to continue to provide the best possible working conditions for you, the University Library offers:

  • Extended opening hours in the Main Library also during the lecture-free period: Undisturbed work on all weekends (Saturdays 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. and Sundays 1 p.m. - 7 p.m.) and on long Wednesdays until midnight.
  • Quiet workplaces in the departmental libraries Aula (DL 2) and Ulmer Hof (DL 1) (Monday to Friday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., during the lecture-free period from February 20 to April 16, 2023 Monday to Friday 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.).
For personal documents you can reserve a locker (Aula) or a movable storage trolley (Ulmer Hof) here – this applies to all students for the time of the construction works and is free of charge. You do not need to present the form “Confirmation regarding preparation of a qualification work” (Bestätigung über die Durchführung einer Qualifikationsarbeit).
  • Earplugs are available free of charge at the information desk in the Main Library.

The aim of the construction measures is to enable self-lending and self-return of the holdings using RFID technology. The system has already proven worthwhile in the Ingolstadt Branch Library and in the Departmental Library 2 Aula. In addition, the reading room will be designed even more than before as a quiet study and work space; consultation and lending will take place outside the reading room for this purpose in the future.
For the entire project, the KU Facility Management, the architect’s office Behnisch and the University Library are currently working together intensively.
