When Domestic Workers Become Writers – Lecture by Mariana Filgueiras

How are domestic workers in Latin America becoming authors of their own stories? Dr. Mariana Filgueiras (UFMG/DAAD) explores this transformation through literature, cinema, and visual arts.

As part of its lecture series Lateinamerika in Bewegung, ZILAS welcomes Dr. Mariana Filgueiras, a postdoctoral researcher in Literary Studies at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil, and a DAAD fellow in Germany.

In her lecture, “When Domestic Workers Become Writers: A Latin American Overview,” Filgueiras examines a significant transformation in Latin American cultural production.

Despite their essential contribution to everyday life, domestic workers have long been marginalized or stereotyped in literary representations. Increasingly, however, they are becoming authors of their own narratives, challenging established perspectives on labor, class, gender, and social inequality.

Drawing on literature, cinema, and visual arts, the lecture investigates the relationship between aesthetic emancipation, social mobility, and the care economy in the Global South.

Alongside her academic career, Mariana Filgueiras has extensive experience as a journalist and screenwriter in Brazil.
