The subject of English Literary Studies covers the literature and culture of the United Kingdom and Ireland as well as the New literatures in English from the early modern period to the present day. Our seminars can be attended as part of the teaching degree program (advanced and basic) and in the KU's Bachelor's and Master's degree programs.
As of 1st August 2026, Monika Class has been appointed Professor of English Literature.
Previously, Professor Monika Class served as Associate Professor at Lund University, Sweden, from 2022 to 2026, and as Junior Professor at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz from 2016 to 2022. She also led two EU Marie-Curie postdoctoral projects on literature and medicine (2011–2013; 2014–2016), as well as the DFG-funded (DFG) research project Visceral Novel Reader (2019–2023).
Her research explores the relationship between English-language texts and lived realities. Taking into account different media, human diversity, and vulnerable environments, she examines the functions and value of English-language literatures in cultural transformation processes, both historically and in the present day.
