Recognition and credit transfer

Credit transfer request

Please always submit your credit transfer request using our online credit transfer portal. Read the quick guide and more detailed instructions here.

If you are enrolled in a degree program that does not yet use the digital online procedure, which currently only applies to the Magister in Catholic Theology, the Digital Bachelor’s program in Catholic Theology and some certificate courses, please contact the responsible board of examiners directly.

Before submitting your request, please take advice to clarify any questions regarding the recognition and credit transfer for skills or study or examination achievements.

There are various types of credit transfer (internal credit transferexternal credit transferLearning Agreements) that can be applied for.

After your request has been approved by the Board of Examiners, you will only be able to repeat the module if it can expressly be chosen multiple times (Mehrfachwahl) or grade improvement is expressly permitted for the module in accordance with the examination regulations that apply to you. At the end of a successful recognition or credit transfer process, the credits are recorded in KU.Campus, which makes the result visible in your individual overview of grades.

Please note that at the KU, there are several processes, that are often confused for being cases of credit transfer or recognition but are actually not (Common cases of confusion)! This means that they do not require a credit transfer request. In particular, these are: re-bookings of credits, recording credits for an examination, the recording of credits for modules chosen multiple times, the allocation of modules, the inclusion of additional achievements and the registration of voluntary work

Purpose of recognition and credit transfer

The purpose of recognition and credit transfer is to incorporate skills already acquired, usually from another degree program or from areas outside the University, into the current or future degree program. This allows students to plan the course of study individually and can help to shorten the duration of studies and avoid duplication. The aim of Learning Agreements is to obtain a binding commitment for the recognition of modules before the start of a study abroad program.

Criteria for credit transfer/ recognition

Recognition and crediting decisions are always competence-oriented. The recognition of higher education achievements or certificates of achievement is based on whether there is a significant difference to the competences that can be acquired at the KU. For the recognition of skills acquired in a non-university context, proof must be provided that the skills to be recognized are equivalent . The amount of ECTS credits plays a subordinate role.
