Profile

Andreas Kallert studied political science at the University of Bamberg and graduated in 2011.  In his diploma thesis he dealt with the classical political economy of Smith and Ricardo and especially with Marx's theory of fetishism and his theory of value.

In his doctoral thesis at the University of Marburg, he investigated the bank bailouts during the 2007-2009 financial crisis in Germany. Here he analyzed how the social discourse developed on the basis of two case studies - the public IKB, which was rescued in 2007, and Hypo Real Estate, which was rescued in 2008. In doing so, he traced the role that the strategy and the narrative of "systemic relevance" played, along with the appropriation of all citizens as potential victims of the financial crisis. He formulated a well-founded critique of systemic relevance, which materialized in laws and institutions and became a passe-partout for access to public funds.

Following his PhD, he used a Fritz Thyssen research grant to investigate the role of "systemic importance" in the European Banking Union. He focused on the Spanish and Italian banking markets and the recent bank bailout of Italy's Monte dei Paschi.

Since 2016, Andreas Kallert has intensified his human geography research, especially focusing on the uneven development of rural areas in the context of austerity and financialization. In addition to several articles, the studies on (in)equal living conditions in Bavaria (2017) and Hesse (2020) are the result of this work.
