A Heart of Human Geography - The Teaching

Teaching young people knowledge and skills of human geography is a core part of our chair. We build on a long tradition of training human geographers. Since the introduction of the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes as part of the Bologna Process, we have been accompanying students on their way to obtaining the academic title "BSc Geography with a focus on Society, Tourism and Environment" or "MSc Tourism and Sustainable Regional Development - Management and Geography". Human Geography is also involved in the subject's teacher training programmes. Furthermore, it forms one of the three supporting pillars of the Bachelor's degree programme "Romance Studies - Economics - Geography" and is involved in the interdisciplinary "German-French integrated degree programme in Political Science" (BA, profile "Human Geography and Regional Development"), the BA "Economic Sustainability & Social Responsibility" (specialisation" Spaces & Politics for Sustainable Futures") and the Master's degree "Geography: Education for Sustainable Development".

Human Geography in the Bachelor of Geography

Die Humangeographie im Bachelorstudiengang Geographie

Human geography is one of the main pillars of the Bachelor's degree programme in Geography. Together with the Chair of Tourism and the Chair of Economic Geography, we offer the specialisation "Society, Tourism, Environment" and feed modules into the specialisation "General Geography".

Other focal points of human geography in teaching in the BA programme are urban and social geography, the geographies of globalisation, tourism geography, methods of empirical social research and society-environment research. Elective modules on geographic development research, the theory of science, media geography, spatial planning as well as tourism psychology and sociology round off the course offerings. Highlights of the study programme in human geography are the large-scale project work and large-scale terrain seminars carried out by the research group.

All information about the "BSc Geography" can be found here.

Human Geography in the Master Tourism

Die Humangeographie im Master Tourismus

Human geography is also firmly anchored in the Master's programme "Tourism and Sustainable Regional Development - Management and Geography". The Master's programme is supported by the renowned Chairs of Human Geography, of Tourism and of Economics as well as the Chair of Economic Geography. The cooperation of the four working units in the conception, development and implementation of the Master's programme ensures a comprehensive view of current topics in the various research and training foci of the degree programme. Human geography has been involved in research in the geography of tourism for many years and is concerned here, among other things, with the nexus of society, environment and nature as well as sustainable tourism, the organisational learning of tourism companies in the context of tourism crises, the political economy and ecology of tourism, topics of corporate regional responsibility and tourism in the Global South.

In teaching, it offers courses within the modules on "social and cultural science perspectives of tourism geography", on "sustainable tourism", "tourism and sustainable regional development in the Global South", "advanced methods" within the "large project study" and the "international research seminar".

All information about the Master's programme "Tourism and Sustainable Regional Development - Management and Geography" can be found here.
