Prof. Dr. Benjamin Dahlke, KU Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, and Prof. Dr. Marco Hofheinz, Institute for Protestant Theology at Leibniz University Hannover, invite you to an interdisciplinary conference in Eichstätt from February 26 to 28, 2026.
The Culture Wars (James Davison Hunter) refer to conflicts over ethical and socio-political issues that have shaped the United States since the 1960s and have become more entrenched in the present day with the establishment of feminist, queer, and anti-racist positions, for example.
In particular, the observation that, in the course of social debates, religion becomes politicized and politics becomes religiously charged determines the questions addressed at the conference. This dynamic between religion and politics can be seen, for example, in the struggle for abortion rights or against increasing authoritarianism, as well as in the political instrumentalization of theologian and resistance fighter Dietrich Bonhoeffer or the murdered Christian fundamentalist influencer and Trump supporter Charlie Kirk.
Following these traces, the conference invites an interdisciplinary analysis of the culture wars and the significance of the relationship between Christian religion and politics for the “culture war” in the US, which also serves as a mirror for corresponding developments in Europe.
