you are here: KU.de  Tourism and regional planning  Application

  • Basically there are three options for applying for admission to the master’s degree program or acquiring a degree in this program:

    1) Regular application:
The prerequisite for application is proof of a language level of B2 or higher in German (!) and English. After you have successfully completed the application process or been accepted, you can study the 1st and 3rd semester in German and the 2nd semester in English. You have the option of writing your master’s thesis in German or English.

    2) ERASMUS exchange:
You are already studying at a university or college that has an ERASMUS exchange with our master’s degree program or with the KU? Then you can apply for an exchange with our master’s degree program with the help of the ERASMUS advisors at your university. In that case you spend one summer semester here (each year from 15 April to 15 July). Please be sure to ask your university about the deadline for registration in plenty of time. You can find information on ERASMUS at the KU here: http://www.ku.de/en/international/incoming-students/

    3) You are a student at Univerzita Mateja Bela in Banská Bystrica? Then you have the option of acquiring a double degree in the master’s degree program. Please contact the supervisors of the double degree program at your university in advance.

Should you have questions about the application process, please contact Christian Nordhorn.

Below is information in case you want to apply for regular admission:

We would like to encourage you to apply if you have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree

    • in a degree program in human geography or economics
    • in a related field (e.g. cultural studies, political science, sociology, regional planning, etc.)
    • in a teacher education program with a major in “geography” or “economics,” in another degree program in which you acquired the basic knowledge of human geography or economics required for this master’s degree program

and have a general interest in the innovative scientific analysis of topics related to tourism in the context of regional planning and destination development. Because of the international orientation of the program in the second semester you should have a very good command of English.

The deadline for application for the winter semester 2015/2016 is 1 July 2015.

What happens after we receive your documents?

The procedure after we receive your application papers is as follows: by mid-July you can expect to be invited to a 30-40 minute interview in front of a commission. The interviews are held in Eichstätt at the end of July (two applicants are always invited to an interview at the same time). (The exact dates will also be published here.)

In this interview we would like to get to know you. We will ask you about basic economic and sociological conditions relating to the master’s degree program. It is not our objective to test your “knowledge,” but rather to learn about your ability to reason about issues. But also to determine whether your methodological training is likely to have prepared you to deal with complex issues. We would like you to show us whether you have the motivation, aptitude and communicative abilities to achieve the goal of the interdisciplinary course independently and responsibly. Your performance in the interview will be graded. If you pass the interview successfully (with a grade of at least “satisfactory”) you will be ranked on the basis of

    • A certificate showing your final grade in a bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree (see above) and
    • The grade in the interview

The ranking order is calculated from the arithmetic mean of the grades, weighted as follows:

    1. Final grade in a bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree (see above): DOUBLE
    2. Grade in the interview (at least 4.0): SINGLE

Applicants with the same grade are assigned the same rank. The ranking order is the deciding factor for admission to the course “Tourism and Regional Planning - Management and Geography / Tourismus und Regionalplanung - Management und Geographie.”

The end of the application process

Once you have been ranked, you will receive written notification by the middle of August. We will inform you of the total number of persons admitted to the program and your standing in the ranking (should we later accept applicants from the reserve list, they will be sent notices in September). For the winter semester 2015/2016 we will admit 20 students. The written notice we send you will contain essential information on admission and registration.

    Additional information

1 July (or the specified deadline) is also the deadline for foreign applicants who are eligible for the same admission procedures as Germans: foreigners from the EU or who have been awarded a scholarship by a German organization and foreigners from countries who do not have to apply for a student visa in their home country before entering Germany, or foreigners who have already studied in Germany.

The recommended application date for foreign students who are not eligible for the same admission procedures as Germans is 15 January. This group of persons will receive invitations for the aptitude test, or alternatively rejections, in May. The selection procedure will then be held for all prospective students (Germans and foreigners) at the same time. Please take advantage of the information offered by the student record office (Studentenkanzlei) of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt (cf. links on the right side).
