The planning of production systems requires reliable information about the performance of each potential configuration. Production rate, cycle time, average inventory and other measures allow to evaluate whether a system is appropriate and efficient compared to its alternatives. Typically, production systems are modeled as queuing networks as shown in the figure below. They can be analyzed with computer simulations and with exact or heuristic analytical methods.
