Eduroam - information

Eduroam (education roaming) is a joint initiative of numerous European scientific networks that provides all members of participating universities, higher education institutions and other scientific institutions with an easy way to access the internet at the locations of all participating organizations. Users are allocated an individual user ID and password with which they can log into the Wi-Fi network at the respective organization. Authentication is effected via a corresponding network of RADIUS servers (Remote Authentication Dial-IUser Service) at the respective home organization of the user. The Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt (KU) is also connected via the German scientific network X-WiN and the service DFNroaming. The map accessible at www.eduroam.de provides a good overview of all participating eduroam members in the X-WiN network.

Before you can set up a connection via the eduroam network you have to configure your notebook accordingly so that it can use the EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol) protocol required for authentication. The KU supports the EAP-TTLS (Tunneled Transport Layer Security) version, which initially creates an encrypted TLS channel between the notebook as the client and the RADIUS server upon authentication.

To ensure that the client can be certain to be connected to the correct server to which the user entrusts his password for authentication in his home organization, the RADIUS server identifies itself to the client with a certificate signed by the DFN-PKI as Certification Authority (CA).
