The prize is awarded annually by the KU's Shalom Working Group for Justice and Peace. In June, Kiran Kamal Prasad, founder of the Jeevika organization, accepted the award at a ceremony in Eichstätt. Jeevika's long-term goal is to create an egalitarian social order - without a caste system, patriarchy, forced labor and child labor. This is to be achieved by legal, economic, political, social and cultural means. Former victims help other people threatened or affected by bonded labor. With the collected donations, the Jeevika organization can buy urgently needed electronic devices and other materials for children and young people. In addition, the organization will purchase books on the subject of "slavery" and the caste system for the planned study and research center.
The Shalom Prize, which has been awarded since 1981, is one of the most highly endowed human rights prizes in Germany and is financed solely by donations. In recent years, around 30,000 euros have been raised in each case. With the Shalom prize, the voluntary working group from Eichstätt annually honors individuals or groups who support the preservation of human rights and global peace in an exemplary manner and often at considerable personal risk. The work of the Shalom working group is purely voluntary – it is supported by students, alumni and employees of the KU as well as Eichstätt citizens.
