Recurring German-Korean Colloquium

The Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt and Sogang University in Seoul have maintained a close partnership for over two decades, from which friendships have also emerged. Every two years, the German-Korean Colloquium takes place alternately in Seoul and Eichstätt, where renowned scholars engage in lively exchanges on German-Korean politics, particularly focusing on migration and integration. The lectures from these colloquia are regularly published in collected volumes.

The first encounter between German and Korean scholars dates back to the 1980s, when the esteemed philosopher and professor Chong Tai Pak from Sogang University used his sabbatical to explore German universities. He was especially interested in the field of Catholic Social Teaching, which Professor Rauscher had represented since 1971 at the Faculty of Catholic Theology at the University of Augsburg. Their discussions focused not only on fundamental questions but also on current socio-ethical challenges that arose in Germany after World War II and in Korea following the end of the Korean War and the division of the country. The Catholic Social Science Central Office had already gained experience in intercultural academic dialogue through the German-American Colloquia, which had been held alternately in Germany and the USA since 1990. The Korean interlocutors proposed to Professor Rauscher that similar German-Korean colloquia be organized, where scholars and experts from various disciplines could present, discuss, and exchange their views.

Strategic partnership with the University of Wroclaw, Poland

Interest in political parties in Bavaria brought Mariusz Kozerski from the University of Wrocław to Eichstätt in August 2020. It was the beginning of an intensive partnership between the Chair of Comparative Political Science at KU and colleagues at Professor Tadeusz Lebioda's Chair of German Studies at the University of Wrocław. This was soon followed by the signing of an Erasmus+ partnership agreement. In February 2024, both universities reaffirmed their collaboration in a cooperation agreement. From 2022 to 2024, both chairs successfully participated in a DAAD project.
