Pre-semester Intensive German Program (A1.1 - B2.1 or C1.1)

Course Description

Prepare for your studies at KU and improve your German skills before the semester begins.

Course dates in the academic year 2025/2026:

Credits: 5 ECTS

Course levels: German A1.1, A2.1, B1.1, B2.1 (C1.1 may also be offered if required)

Course locations: The A1.1 course usually takes place at the Ingolstadt campus. The other courses are offered in Eichstätt or Ingolstadt, depending on availability.

Target Group

Exchange students from all programs as well as international degree-seeking students enrolled in English-taught degree programs who are required to reach and document German level A2 within their first year of studies.

  • €280.00 for exchange students and regular KU students
  • €330.00 for free mover students
  • Additional costs for course materials (approx. €40.00)
     

Special regulations

  • Erasmus+ students receive a reimbursement of €150.00 after successful course completion.
  • ISEP students are exempt from course fees.
  • Students of the German-French Double Degree Program in Political Science (IEP Rennes) receive a reimbursement of the full course fee after successful completion of the course.

German language courses during the semester

Course Description

The Language Center offers a wide range of general German language courses as well as skills-specific courses (e.g., speaking and writing practice, German culture and society, pronunciation, academic writing, and more).

Q-Course (A1 Preparatory Course for the Intensive German Course)

Course Description

The Q-Course is a preparatory course preceding the 8-month Intensive German Course leading to the DSH exam. The course objective of the Q-Course is to complete level A1.

Course dates 2025:

  • August 25 – October 7, 2025
    • Module 1: August 25 – September 12, 2025
    • Module 2: September 15 – October 3, 2025 (please note: classes will also be held on October 3, a public holiday in Germany)

Course fees:

  • Students admitted to KU: €500.00 (for both modules)
  • External participants: €490.00 per module (€980.00 for both modules)

Course format:
The Q-Course takes place online via Zoom.

Technical requirements for participation:

  • Stable internet connection
  • Computer or laptop (no smartphones or tablets)
  • Headset
  • Webcam

Workload expectations:
Participants are expected to attend daily classes (4 hours), participate in a study group (1 hour), and spend approximately 45 minutes per day on self-study.

Target Group

Applicants who intend to pursue a full degree program at KU but who have not yet reached the required German language level for admission to the Intensive German Course (preparation for the DSH exam).

Intensive German Course – Preparation for the DSH Exam

Course Description

This course extends over two semesters and generally starts in the fall semester. The minimum admission requirement is a completed A1 level, which must be proven through an entrance test.

Target Group

KU students with conditional admission to a German-taught bachelor’s program.

Exchange students and free movers are not eligible to participate in this course.

Prerequisite: Completed level A1 (verified by a mandatory entrance test).

Intensive German Course (2 semesters)

Course Description

This course is offered to selected partner universities of KU and places are limited. Students who wish to participate must be nominated by their home university.

The Intensive German Course prepares students for the DSH (German Language Examination for University Admission of Foreign Applicants). The exam can be taken at KU and entitles students to study at KU; in general, other German universities also accept the DSH certificate. With DSH level 2 you are eligible to enroll in any degree program. A CEFR language level (GER) cannot be certified separately.

Exchange students who successfully complete the course will receive a Transcript of Records with more than 40 ECTS credits. Depending on the schedule, it may also be possible to attend additional courses (e.g., English-taught seminars in the faculties).

Course duration: Mid-October until early July of the following year (8 months)

  • Completed German A1 level (verified by an entrance test)
  • Nomination by the sending partner university
Target Group
  • Exchange students from selected partner universities who wish to achieve a high level of German within a short period of time
  • Exchange students planning to continue their studies in Germany

KU Summer School

Course Description

The KU Summer School is our premium German language program in July/August. It combines intensive German learning with cultural studies and/or literature as well as an attractive and diverse cultural and social program.
