Why go abroad for an internship?
Have you already gained some experience in the German job market? Then it is high time you went abroad for some more. An internship in another country can help you develop your intercultural skills even further and prepare you for the reality of international work environments – a real asset in today’s globalized economies.

If you have come to Germany from abroad to study here, you have already gained lots of valuable experience that will do you good in your graduate job search. Adding to this by going abroad again is always a great decision – HR are on the lookout for people with international experience, as studies have shown. Here are some skills you will most probably improve:

  • Independence
  • Openness
  • Adaptability
  • Empathy
  • Communication skills
  • And of course: language skills

Unsolicited job applications – great opportunities

In many cases, job or internship opportunities exist behind the scenes – but you do not have access to them openly because there are no obvious offers published. This is where unsolicited job applications come into action – this just means that you can contact companies and organisations and ask for internship opportunities without there being a specific job offer at hand.

So contacting your company of interest to offer your services as an intern opens up great opportunities for you. Important: the first point of contact is vital here, so make sure you do profound research on the company first and know exactly why you want to intern there. This will help you make convincing first contact and draw up excellent, on-point application documents. However, do not send your CV and cover letter at first contact. Call them first, or write an email expressing your serious interest and offer to send them your documents.

When applying abroad, it is highly important that you research the respective country’s application standards. Some examples for your research:

UK/Ireland:

Australia/New Zealand:

France / Spain
