Funding is available both for German and international students who are enrolled in a degree program at the KU. Incoming exchange students are not eligible for funding. Stays in the respective home countries are not funded. The home country is the country in which the student has lived for at least five years (nationality plays a subordinate role here). Stays in Austria, Liechtenstein, South Tyrol and Switzerland are not funded either (please see below). Doctoral students are not eligible for funding for study stays and internships.

The following students can apply:

• Bachelor’s, teacher training and Master’s students who would like to study abroad outside the Erasmus area (self-organized and/or through KU programs).
• Bachelor’s, teacher training and Master’s students who plan to study in the Erasmus area in the context of a self-organized stay abroad and cannot receive Erasmus+ funding (so-called “free movers”) because the KU does not have a corresponding agreement with the desired host university.

PLEASE NOTE:

• Stays in Austria, Liechtenstein, South Tyrol and Switzerland are not funded.
• Students must remain enrolled at the KU for the entire duration of their PROMOS scholarship funding (however, it is possible to request a leave of absence).
• The number of scholarship funds available is limited, so it is likely that not all qualified applicants will receive a scholarship. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you also apply to other funding organizations in any case, if possible.

The following criteria are taken into account when scholarships are awarded:

• Academic achievements (average grade of at least 2.30 or better).
  • Bachelor and teacher training students: The grade shown on the Transcript of Records at the time of application counts. Bachelor students in their third semester must have achieved at least 50 ECTS in their studies by then. Otherwise an application is not possible. Bachelor and teacher training students in higher semesters must be able to prove an average of 25 ECTS per semester.
  • Master: For Master students in the 1st and 2nd semester the grade of the Bachelor degree is valid, for Master students in the 3rd semester and higher the current grade average is valid. Master students in higher semesters must be able to prove an average of 25 ECTS per semester at the KU.
• Language skills
• Contents and quality of the study-abroad project and connection to previous studies so far
• Voluntary social commitment at AK International or ESN
• After completion of the stay abroad:
  You must provide evidence of successful study at the host university.
  • Bachelor and teacher training students students must successfully complete at least 20 ECTS at the host university. If you do not comply with this requirement, you may have to pay back your funding completely. Proof is provided by the Transcript of Records that students receive from the host university.
  • Master students must successfully complete at least 15 ECTS at the host university. If you do not comply with this requirement, you may have to pay back your funding completely. Proof is provided by the Transcript of Records that students receive from the host university.

In case of equal qualifications, students with a compulsory study-abroad component in their programs will be prioritized.

The application for PROMOS is done by e-mail. Send all documents in the given order (see below) as one PDF document to promosstudium@ku.de. Use the following subject: "Application for Promos"

• Signed application form DOWNLOAD
• Letter of motivation in English: Please explain in your letter of motivation:
  • Why you are doing a semester abroad
  • Why you are applying for this funding.
  • How this funding can support your academic and professional development.
  • Address the letter of motivation to the Promos selection committee.
• Certificate of enrollment from KU for the current semester
• Official Transcript of Records in English: This document lists all courses and the respective grades you have earned so far. Please apply for your Transcript of Records in English at the Examination Office in good time.
  • Bachelor's students of the DFS who have returned from Rennes: Submit both your transcript of records from the KU and your official "Relevés de Notes". The document "non certifié" will not be accepted!
  • Master's students in their first semester: Submit the transcript of records of your Bachelor's program in English as well as your Bachelor's certificate.
  • Master's students in higher semesters: Submit the transcript of records of your Bachelor's program in English, your Bachelor's certificate and the transcript of records of your Master's program at the KU.
• Language certificate as specified for the respective program
• Signed liability disclaimer and saftey precautions
• Only for free movers:
  • Proof of registration in Mobility Online. Free Movers should create an application using the following link in Mobility-Online: Mobility Online - Free Mover.
  • If already available: Admission to the host university.
• Optional: Proof of voluntary work with AK International or ESN

It is not possible to combine this program with other scholarships that are explicitly awarded for a study stay abroad (e.g. by the DAAD, Erasmus+, Swiss-European Mobility Programme or organizations for the promotion of young talent).

• Residence allowance: monthly scholarship for at least three months, regardless of the length of the stay
• Possibly: The best application might receive a mobility lump sum (travel subsidy) on top.

• Please note that the PROMOS scholarship is intended as a financial supplement, not a full scholarship, and it does not cover all expenses.

When they are selected for a DAAD PROMOS scholarship for their travel costs or their stay, nominated students will receive a scholarship certificate and a scholarship agreement, which they must sign and submit to the International Office.

The PROMOS scholarship does not include any insurance coverage. However, students who receive funding have the option of taking out insurance via the DAAD.

After completion of the stay abroad or the funding period, the following documents must be uploaded to Mobility Online within one month after the end of the funding period:
