Call for applications Promotion of Internationalization - Outgoing

The call for applications "Promotion of Internationalization - Outgoing" for study stays outside Europe within the framework of a KU exchange program has been launched. The funding period ends on December 31, 2025.

Application requirements

Funding is available both for German and international students who are enrolled in a degree program at the KU and who were selected for a KU exchange program outside Europe.

The following students can apply:

  • Bachelor's and Master's students who have been selected for a study stay abroad through the worldwide program.
  • Bachelor's and Master's students who have been selected for a study stay abroad outside Europe through a faculty program.
  • Master`s students who are enrolled at the KU for a double degree program with a university outside Europe.

Students must remain enrolled at the KU for the entire duration of their Promotion of Internationalization scholarship funding

The number of scholarship funds available is limited, so it is likely that not all qualified applicants will receive a scholarship. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you also apply to other funding organizations in any case, if possible.

Selection criteria

The following criteria are taken into account when scholarships are awarded:

  • Academic achievements
  • Financial hardship - financial hardship is proven when the study stay abroad cannot be financed neither by own funds nor by third-party funding (e.g. in form of a scholarship awarded by another institution or by financial support provided by the parents). Those who do not exceed the following annual gross income limits are considered to suffer financial hardship within the above meaning:
    • Applicant € 15,000
    • Plus an additional € 8,000 for every dependent child
    • Financial hardship is proven by a self-declaration which you can download from "Application process and documents".
  • Purpose and intent of the planned study stay abroad for the further course of studies
  • Voluntary social commitment at AK International or ESN
  • After completion of the stay abroad:
    You must provide proof of successful studies at the host university.

    • BA students must successfully complete at least 20 ECTS at the host university, If you do not comply with this requirement, you may have to pay back your funding completely. Proof is provided by the Transcript of Records that students receive from the host university.

    • MA students must successfully complete at least 15 ECTS at the host university. If you do not comply with this requirement, you may have to pay back your funding completely. Proof is provided by the Transcript of Records that students receive from the host university.

In case of equal qualifications, students with a compulsory study-abroad component in their programs will be prioritized.

Application process and documents

The application for the scholarship "Promotion of Internationalization - Outgoing" is done by e-Mail. Send all documents in the given order (see below) as one PDF document to foerderunginternational@ku.de. Use the following subject: "Application for Promotion of Internationalization - Outgoing“.

Application deadline: February 15, 2025. Applications received after this date will not be considered. The date of receipt counts.

Required documents:

  • Letter of motivation in English: Please explain in your letter of motivation
    • Why you are doing a semester abroad
    • Why you are applying for this funding.
    • How this funding can support your academic and professional development.
    • Address the letter of motivation to the Promotion of Internationalization selection committee.
  • Certificate of enrollment from KU for the current semester
  • Official Transcript of Records in English: This document lists all courses and the respective grades you have earned so far. Please apply for your Transcript of Records in English at the Examination Office in good time.
    • BA students of the DFS who have returned from Rennes: Submit both your transcript of records from the KU and your official "Relevés de Notes". The document "non certifié" will not be accepted!

    • MA students in their first semester: Submit the transcript of records of your Bachelor's program in English as well as your Bachelor's certificate.

    • MA students in higher semesters: Submit the transcript of records of your Bachelor's program in English, your Bachelor's certificate and the transcript of records of your Master's program at the KU.

  • Optional: Proof of voluntary work with AK International or ESN

Combination with other sources of financing

It is not possible to combine this program with other scholarships that are explicitly awarded for a study stay abroad (e.g. by the DAAD, Erasmus+, Swiss-European Mobility Programme or organizations for the promotion of young talent).

Scholarship payments

  • Mobility lump sum: travel subsidy of max. 1,000 EUR for outward and return journey
  • Possibly: Residence allowance: monthly scholarship of max. 300 EUR for a maximum of three months, regardless of the length of the stay
  • Please note that this scholarship is intended as a financial supplement, not a full scholarship, and it does not cover all expenses.

Important information

The scholarship "Promotion of Internationalization" does not include any insurance coverage. However, students who receive funding have the option of taking out insurance via the DAAD.

After completion of the stay abroad or the funding period, the following documents must be uploaded to Mobility Online within one month after the end of the funding period:

  • Transcript of Records of the host university
  • Experience report
