Within the framework of an international visiting professorship, Dr. Romano Wyss returned digitally to KU, his alma mater, where he earned his doctoral degree, as he did last year. Based on his own research in the Andermatt region, he highlighted the importance of governance and networks in the context of tourism, while also addressing methodological aspects.
The lecture highlighted key findings in the field of destination development, particularly with regard to the challenges and success factors in implementing governance projects. A key learning was that these projects often take a long time to come to fruition, as the political processes necessary to initiate change are not always visible from the outside. It was also emphasized that it is crucial to have a strong partner within the destination who can drive change. This actor plays an essential role by acting as a catalyst for change and initiating adaptation processes. Interestingly, these projects are often driven by individual actors whose personal commitment and influence contribute significantly to progress. The importance of key players and intermediaries should not be underestimated, as they often act as a link between the various interest groups and can significantly influence the communication and decision-making process. These dynamic interactions underscore the complexity and necessity of a strategic, integrated approach to destination development.
