Welcome to the page of the Professorship for Data Assimilation

In order to be able to predict severe weather events or the melting of ice in the Arctic, information in the form of heterogeneous data must be linked with numerical models of dynamic systems. This is done through data assimilation, which makes it possible to better investigate processes and predict their further development.  In the field of data assimilation, the professorship is concerned with the further development of data science algorithms by incorporating physical conservation laws, and solving correspondingly large optimisation problems in the environmental sciences. Quantifying the uncertainties of predictions, numerical models and observations also plays a central role here.

MIDS at Dies Academicus 2023

This year's Dies Academicus took place in Eichstätt on May 23, 2023. Guests included Minister of Science Markus Blume and Cardinal Reinhard Marx.

The Mathematical Institute for Machine Learning and Data Science was also mentioned on this important evening. Looking back on the past academic year at KU, important milestones were set with the founding of the institute, the revitalization of the historic campus in the heart of Ingolstadt, and the launch of the new bachelor's degree program in Data Science.

MIDS attaches great importance to imparting both knowledge transfer and sensitivity with regard to the use of data when training new data analysts. As the Bavarian Minister of Science, Markus Blume, said that evening, KU is strong in being "on the pulse of the times, but equally firm when it comes to providing the necessary constants with the Christian foundation of values, which is underpinned here."
