International Winter School „Management Simulation in Tourism” 2026

From 22 to 28 February 2026, the WFI – Ingolstadt School of Management, in close cooperation with the Chair of Tourism and the School of Transformation and Sustainability, once again hosted the Winter School ‘Management Simulation in Tourism’. Students and lecturers from all over Europe came together for a week to make strategic decisions in tourism management under realistic competitive conditions and to experience intercultural cooperation.

A total of 78 students participated in twelve competing teams. Represented were Comenius University Bratislava, Karlshochschule International University, Jagiellonian University, Matej Bel University, the University of Birmingham, the University of Macerata, the University of Trento, and KU, including its double degree programmes. They were accompanied by ten international coaches (Karlshochschule International University, Comenius University Bratislava, İzmir Kâtip Çelebi University (IKCU), Jagiellonian University, Matej Bel University, Tallinn University of Technology, University of Birmingham, University of Tartu, Pärnu College), four coaches from KU, eight student coaches from KU and Corvinus University Budapest, and a six-member student media team.

The week began with city tours in Ingolstadt and a visit to the Audi Museum Mobile, before the official opening and the development of the business concepts took centre stage on Monday. On Tuesday, the teams presented their strategies in investor pitches and gained insights into the local hotel ‘DAS ALTMÜHLTAL’ during an excursion to Eichstätt. Wednesday was characterised by a trade fair where the groups presented their business concepts in a competitive environment. Thursday proved particularly challenging: in a staged crisis scenario involving tourism protests, the teams had to react appropriately under time pressure and adapt their strategies. After the final on Friday, the participants ended the week on Saturday with a joint excursion to the Oberschleißheim Palace complex and Munich.

At its core, the management simulation represents an innovative teaching concept that closely interlinks theory and practice. In a realistic business game, students take on the management of a tourism company, make strategic decisions and directly experience the consequences of their actions in a competitive environment. The international composition of the teams promotes intercultural competence and collaborative work. Continuous coaching, structured feedback phases and reflection provide targeted support for the learning process. The combination of blended learning, practice-oriented decision-making rounds and excursions to partners creates a learning space in which technical, methodological and social skills are strengthened in equal measure.
