Workshop and Networking Day | July 4, 2023, in Eichstätt

Young Researchers Day 2023 was an inspiring opportunity for around 50 doctoral candidates and postdocs to explore the topic Interdisziplinäres Forschen – Perspektiven für Qualifikation und Karriereentwicklung and to exchange valuable insights and experiences.

welcome

In his opening speech, Vice President for Research and Junior Researchers, Prof. Dr. Jens Hogreve, shared his personal experiences from working on interdisciplinary projects.

An exciting keynote followed, in which Dr. Anna Froese from the WZB Berlin presented current research results on the question of how interdisciplinary research can contribute to the development of academic careers.

The subsequent hands-on workshops offered the opportunity to deepen central aspects of interdisciplinary work and interdisciplinary career management both within and without academia in exchange with each other.

The joint lunch break in the seminary created a stimulating framework for networking among the doctoral candidates and postdocs, and also with representatives from the International Office, the University Library, the Mentoring Program for Female Junior Researchers, the Methods Service Centre and the HR Development and Professional Training Department, who provided information about their services.

Highlight of the day was the final discussion, in which the topics of the day were taken up and personal experiences and impressions from different contexts of interdisciplinary cooperation were exchanged. The interactive fishbowl format gave everyone the opportunity to spontaneously participate in the discussion, ask questions or share their input.

As representatives of the research center for advanced studies "Natural Sciences - Human and Nature" and the Research Training Group "Practicing Place", Prof. Dr. Michael Becht and Prof. Dr. Robert Schmidt gave interesting insights into the specific activities of interdisciplinary research structures at KU.

Together with Dr. Florian Habermann, postdoc at the Chair of Management Accounting and Auditing, Dr. Fiona Weiß, postdoc in the field of German as a Second Language, and Madlen Schwing, Research Assistant and doctoral candidate at the Chair of Tourism / Centre for Entrepreneurship, and other participants of the Young Researchers Day, a lively and inspiring discussion developed especially on the different dimensions of interdisciplinary research.

Special thanks go to Fabian Ebeling, doctoral candidate in American Studies and member of the Research Training Group "Practicing Place", for his professional and entertaining moderation.

All in all, the Young Researchers Day 2023 was a great success and illustrated that interdisciplinary research is not only a requirement for the researchers of tomorrow, but also an opportunity for personal and professional development.
