For enrollment in a Master's degree program, an application via our online portal is generally required, because it helps us verify whether you meet the requirements specified in the respective examination regulations.

Provided that our check is positive, you will receive an offer of admission to the KU from the Student Office in the form of a letter of admission. This letter of admission will then allow you to enroll in the Master’s degree program. 

If the requirements for the Master's degree program you have applied for are not met or study places are limited, you will receive a corresponding letter of rejection. 

The basic admission requirement for a Master's degree course is a first professionally qualifying university degree, e.g. a Bachelor's degree (also Fachhochschule degrees), Magister, State Examination or Diplom. The content requirements for the first professionally qualifying university degree are set out in the respective examination regulations. 

If you do not have the relevant certificate by the application deadline, you can usually also apply with your previous study and examination achievements and submit proof of your first university degree by the end of the first semester in the Master's degree program.

In order to apply for a degree program, please submit the following documents via the application portal:  

• Copies of your educational qualification certificates starting with your highest school-leaving qualification,
• Résumé in table form (CV),
• Copy of a valid ID card or passport (data that is not required for identification purposes, in particular access and serial numbers as well as eye color and height can and should be blackened out) 

Additional documents may be required depending on the degree program. Please refer to the information on our study offer website or ask our KUala bot. 

If you are applying for a Master's degree program, we will also need the following documents from you: 

• First university degree (e.g. Bachelor's degree) with transcript of records and average grade achieved
• Alternatively, transcripts of records of the study and examination achievements completed to date for the intended first university degree, stating the individual modules taken with a provisional average grade and the total number of ECTS credits achieved

There are no different application deadlines at the KU regardless of whether you have obtained your school-leaving certificate (Abitur) in the current year or a year before that.

It is not necessary to send application documents by post or e-mail; instead, applications must be submitted online via the application portal according to the following procedure:

• Please register in our application portal first. Please register only once and remember your user name and your chosen password. Registration in the portal is possible all year round, unlike the application.
• The digital application is only possible within the application period for the respective degree program. The degree program only appears in the selection menu in the application portal during the application period.
• First, select the desired degree (e.g. Bachelor Uni, Master Uni, Magister etc.) from the selection menu, then the desired course of study and, if necessary, a specialization or a specific combination of subjects.
• Please answer all questions regarding your educational background, language skills and/or relevant work experience, etc. truthfully and completely.
• Please upload all required documents in the upload fields.
• Depending on your degree program, you may also be asked for information on relevant internships, work experience, etc. Please upload the relevant proof for all information you provide in the upload area, even if these are not mandatory fields.
• Once you have entered all details and uploaded all required documents, you can submit your application.
• All further communication then usually takes place via the application portal. Here, you will also find your letter of admission or rejection as soon as we have completed processing your application. 

You can view the processing status of your application at any time. The prerequisite is that you enter a valid e-mail address when registering and that the e-mail notifications status is also activated.

Please check your application and the documents to be uploaded carefully to ensure that they are complete. The KU is not obliged and, due to the large number of applicants, is generally not in a position to notify you of errors or missing documents in your application. Please only upload documents that are actually required.  

Only applications in due form are admissible. Applications must be submitted using the application portal provided by the KU. An informal application is not permitted. Applications for admission sent by fax or e-mail will not be accepted.

Changes and additions to the submitted application are only possible as long as the application has not yet been processed by the Student Office. Once the application has been processed, your data can only be corrected by the Student Office, but no later than the end of the application deadline. If necessary, please contact us by selecting the appropriate category "Application for Master's degree programs" or "Application for admission-restricted degree programs" in the contact form .  

Generally, you are responsible for any errors in the application. 

Please bear in mind that the processing of applications takes time and can take up to several days.
